On June 9th 2013, Plainfield East High School will celebrate Earth Day by hosting its first ever 5k Race/One Mile Superhero Fun Run in Settler's Park in Plainfield, Illinois. The race is organized by Justin Koszarek, Assistant Band Director, and Rebecca Scott, Environmental Science Club Sponsor. Both teachers are avid runners in the Chicago-area racing scene. Justin originally had an idea to bring a CARA discounted road race to the school, while at the same time, Rebecca was talking about introducing a one mile fun run to benefit Science Club. When they discovered that they were each planning complementary events, Rebecca and Justin decided to work together, and the Eastside Shuffle was born.
Ms. Scott's Costume is ready. Is yours? |
We are committed to planning an event for students, staff, and our community that will promote the ideals of healthy lifestyles, family togetherness, and fighting childhood obesity. Not only that, but we want the day to be fun for everyone. With that in mind, the race introduced the idea of a Superhero Costume Contest, to be judged by the students. We are also giving students an opportunity to give back by offering them a chance to volunteer for the race and earn community service hours. The response from the student body has been overwhelmingly positive. Further, members of Science Club have been working hard to come up with tee shirt designs, posters, and other promotional materials.

The Science Club Indoor Vegetable Garden |
Rebecca states, 'It was my goal this year to become the 'Bill Nye' of PEHS. I want to make it cool again to love Science and for students to feel safe saying that they love science too. I teach both Chemistry and Environmental Science, and with that in mind, it is my mission to teach students about the Earth, the environment, and how to protect nature and live a healthy lifestyle.' This year, Science Club began the process of planting a native tallgrass prairie on campus. Site preparation began this fall, and plant installation is scheduled for spring. The club also started growing vegetables such as tomatoes and peppers from seed in the classroom. These vegetables have been carefully nurtured and are pesticide-free. In the future, I would use any monies earned by our Fun Run to continue to offer and introduce new programs to our students. Rebecca adds, 'Many families in our community, including my own, are struggling financially right now. Taking a trip to Chicago to visit the Museum of Science and Industry is just not in the budget. This is exactly the type of opportunity I would like to provide to my kids. I want to be able to make this trip and visiting the Green House a possibility for them. These are the types of initiatives Science Club supports and how your donations would be used.'
Our High School Band is Sponsoring the 5K
PEHS Marching Bengals in 2012 Homecoming Parade |
With this in mind, the 5k will also support the High School Band, which like Science Club provides students with opportunities to get involved with school, through music education. The Band Boosters play an integral role in supporting the band program
by offering financial resources and volunteer power to assist in
community events. Events such as parades, marching band competitions,
concerts, and other performances. They also assist with funds to
provide music, instruments, uniforms, meals, transportation, and contest
fees to ensure that our students have opportunity to participate in
band workshops and competitions and have a creative outlet for education
and inspiration.

Rebecca says, 'I know our students will be appreciative of community support. I am sure they will get a kick out of seeing their teachers at the race as well as serious runners from the Chicago-area racing community. Further, our race is walker friendly, and strollers and wheelchairs are welcome. I think we have something to offer everyone. Come on out and make it a family affair!' Can't make it to the race? You can still help us by donating or by ordering a 'Running Bengal' race tee. Email rscott2@psd202.org to inquire about tee shirt availability. Thank you for your consideration. Justin and Rebecca are both committed to planning a community event that will be fun for the whole family. We want to promote healthy lifestyles and fight childhood obesity. Please support us, and we will see you at the races!
